1、油中含有多種礦物質和雜質，若不沉淀過濾凈化，會影響柱塞和噴油頭工作，造成供油不均勻，油料霧化不良等現象，使發動機功率下降，油耗增加。因此，建議先將靜置一段時間，讓雜質沉淀，加油時將漏斗加濾網過濾一下。再就是定期清洗或更換過濾器，達到凈化目的。
2、清除積炭。小型發電機在工作中，有聚合物附著在氣門、氣門座、噴油嘴和活塞頂部。這些積炭會增加油耗，應及時清除。
3、不要超負荷作業。小型發電機超負荷作業時會冒黑煙，這是沒有充分燃燒的燃油排放。只要小型發電機常冒黑煙，就會增大油耗，還會縮短零部件的使用壽命。
4、定期檢查，及時修理。要做到眼勤、手勤，要定期或不定期地檢查機械，勤養、勤修，牢固樹立“養重于治，防重于修”的觀念，不要讓機械帶病作業。
